At the quieter end of Puerto del Carmen, Matagorda was actually purpose built from what was originally just a little fishing hamlet. For peace and quiet, a Matagorda holiday is a must as the whole ambience of the area is relaxed and totally geared towards enjoyment without the addition of bright lights and disco blare. Apart from the lovely beach, hotels in Matagorda are the big draw as standards are high.
It's nice to know the option of more nightlife choice is available if necessary and a taxi ride (only a few klms. away in Puerto del Carmen) is extremely reasonable. Alternatively, there's a nice seafront promenade running all the way along that connects both resorts - perfect for whetting the appetite for dinner!
Low key and discreetly sophisticated, the area has some very fine hotels and most have their own evening entertainment. The majority of restaurants and bars are situated in the commercial centre in the square, as is a supermarket and gift shops. There are some beachfront bars and cafes, but in general, nightlife is much more sedate than in nearby Puerto del Carmen, so ideal for a relaxed Lanzarote holiday.
Matagorda has a lovely dark sand beach which has excellent windsurfing facilities and the sand slopes very gently, so its a safe environment for swimming, Scuba diving, parasailing, jet skiing and deep sea fishing are also popular. Further on, the little neighbouring resort of Playa de los Pocillos has an equally nice ambience.
Holidays in Lanzarote are generally relaxing, casual and delightfully laid back. There are no flights to Matagorda, but frequent direct flights to Arrecife from Ireland ensure this unique Canary Island is accessible all year round.
