Puerto del Carmen Accommodation - Lanzarote's premier resort, Puerto del Carmen blossomed around a tiny fishing port which flourishes today with excellent local restaurants all crammed around the harbour. Lovely little bars and cafes line the pedestrianised streets and the aromas of charcoal and sizzling fish waft in the air - deliciously typical of Puerto del Carmen holidays in the Canary Islands.
Away from the harbour, a busy commercial heart beats and hordes of tourist shops, souvenir stalls and duty free outlets vie for the almighty euro. The attractive seafront promenade stretches all the way along to Matagorda and neighbouring Playa de los Pocillos and a stroll is recommended to watch the world go by and decide on the forthcoming pleasures of the evening.
Puerto del Carmen's beach is a wonderful 4 klm. expanse of silky sand with clear water and gently shelving shoreline. There are many watersports outlets and windsurfing is particularly popular. Indeed, Lanzarote Puerto del Carmen is a hugely diverse resort which has mass appeal.
The resort is built on a hill, so a few of the streets are steeply inclined, but well landscaped with lots of flowering shrubs and tropical foliage. From the charming port to the excellent beach and huge selection of shops, music bars, Irish pubs, seafood restaurants and traditional bodegas, Puerto del Carmen is a true Canarian delight!
The other Canarian worth mentioning is, of course, Cesar Manrique, possibly the island's most famous resident and architect with brilliant vision and a will to conserving the integrity of the landscape, thus ensuring holidays in Lanzarote will ever be environmentally friendly and that construction remain pleasing to the eye.
With direct flights to Arrecife from Ireland, it is easy to explore the lovely Lanzarote resorts of Costa Teguise, Playa Blanca and Matagorda and ClickandGo.com has a marvellous selection of hotels from which to choose.
