Northern Ireland's capital and second largest city on the island, Belfast has absolutely come into its own in the past number of years. Regrettably, once better known for matters of terrorism, the city is now thankfully attracting visitors for purposes of shopping, sightseeing and pure pleasure. Rarely will you receive such a warm welcome to any city, so I urge you to discover and experience Belfast soon. The huge trauma of the conflict or "The Troubles", saw an obvious depression in the city's fortunes but, following the Good Friday Agreement, a marvellous urban regeneration has come into being. Victoria Square, the Odyssey Complex and iconic Waterfront Hall are just some of the buildings and areas that have witnessed a smart overhaul. The district around Queen's University has also been rejuvenated and the hordes of students breathe life and laughter into the many cafes, bars and restaurants. Once home to the linen industry in Ireland, Belfast still has a great tradition of general industry, arts and business and is indeed the economic engine and heartbeat of Ulster. Located at the mouth of the River Lagan and flowing into Belfast Lough, the situation was perfect for the birth of ship building. Harland & Wolff, home to the construction of the ill-fated Titanic (between 1911 and 1912), was then the largest ship buillding yard in the world. Even now, the massive cranes "Samson & Goliath" which etch the city's skyline, guarantee that the yard is the world's largest dry dock. These days, Belfast is a mecca for shopping and is a vibrrant artistic hub. The Ulster Museum, Grand Opera House, Lyric Theatre, a marvellous symphony orchestra, Botanic Gardens, and the superb concert and performing arts venues of the Odyssey Arena and Waterfront Hall are examples of Belfast's cultural prowess. One of Belfast's proudest and oldest drinking emporiums, the Crown Liquor Saloon (estd 1876), is the only pub owned by the National Trust in the UK. Pop in to see the great stained glass windows, admire the lovely historical decor and even enjoy a little drink! Travel a bit further than the city limits and the spectacular limestone formation of Giant's Causeway is virtually on the doorstep. Make sure you also visit the Bushmills Distillery to taste a wee dram if you're in the area. The well known American travel publication "Frommers" guide, lists Belfast in their Top 10 destinations to visit in 2009. So, the word is out.........
