Since the end of World War 11, Brussels has been a centre of politics. Home to the European Union, World Customs Organisation and NATO, the city is an absolute hotbed of political action! With a plethora of politicians, journalists and diplomats, the city is a real international hive of activity. Capital of Belgium, Brussels is also the largest city in the country and is a bi-lingual community, speaking both French and Flemish. One of the city's well known landmarks is the infamous Mannekin Pis ( a tiny statue where water emanates from a certain body part!), but there are plenty of other architectural gems to discover. The Grande Place, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a magnificent square with the Town Hall in all its Gothic splendour taking centre stage. Also, worth exploring is the Atomium, built for the World Fair in 1958, constructed in the form of a crystal and dedicated to science and, naturally, the European Quarter to see all the political buildings. Think of Brussels in gastronomic terms and sugary, buttery waffles, "moules frites" (mussels and chips!) and high quality chocolate products spring to mind. Not therefore a destination for the diet conscious! Brussels has a modern side too and there is excellent shopping, many good cafes and wonderful local restaurants. Obviously, Belgian beer should be tasted and the typical bars are friendly and atmospheric, so it is all too easy to sample the many superb different beers. Sante and prost - enjoy!
