Situated in the Rhone-Alpes region of France, Lyon is located between Paris and Marseille and owes it's fame to various fortunate factors. Lyon is the banking centre of France and is the second richest city in the country; in addition, it lies between two important wine growing regions, so benefits from the lusciousness of both Beaujolais and Cotes de Rhone grape productions. Wine is naturally greatly revered and enjoyed. Renowned chefs such as Paul Bocuse put the city on the gastronomic map and mouthwatering marrons glace, Lyonnaise potato, saucisson de Lyon, coq au vin and andouillettes are restaurant staples. Lyon is also a UNESCO World Heritage site and has a wonderful tapestry of stunning architecture and historic landmarks. There is a Roman district and Fourviere, a Renaissance district, Presq'uile and the Silk District with architecture dating from the 12th century and narrow passageways (traboules) that cross through buildings and link through to the Saone river. Some are incredibly even known to date back to the 4th century. Some of the most beautiful buildings are the Basilica of Notre Dame de Fourviere, the medieval Cathedrale de St Jean and the Musee Lumiere, dedicated to the Lumieres Brothers who pioneered cinema in the town in the late 1800's. Today, the city is full of museums, lovely parks and gardens, a lake and excellent shopping opportunities. Lyon is even the world headquarters for Interpol! A wonderful choice for sightseeing, Lyon offers something for the history buff, the gourmand and the wine lover - a fascinating French city by any standards.
