The Big Apple. The city that never sleeps. New York, New York, so good they named it twice. There is little to be said about New York that has not been said before. This is a city with attitude! The terrible events of 9/11 at the World Trade Centre will forever be etched on the human psyche, but New York picked itself up, dusted itself down and invited the world to visit again. A born survivor. Starting at New York Harbour in the late 19th and 20th century, immigrants to the city were greeted by the amazing sight of the Statue of Liberty and entered the USA via Ellis Island. Sitting on the Hudson river, the city comprises five distinct Boroughs - the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Manhatten. Today, New York is the most populous city in the entire country and there are over 800 languages spoken! Chinatown has the greatest number of Chinese people outside China and the area of Little Italy and Greenwich Village with its wonderful "brownstones" are further treasures in New York's ethnic heritage. It's skyline was always instantly recognisable (and restructuring of the Twin Towers will soon reclaim the original) and the landmarks of the Empire State Building, the delightful Art Deco Chrysler Building, Trump Tower and Rockefeller Centre will always be synonomous with New York. Equally iconic, Central Park is the pride of Manhatten, home to the New York zoo, lush parkland, cycle lanes, running tracks and boating lakes. Times Square, often called the Crossroads of the World, is the beginning of Broadway and the Theatre district and is a hub of activity both day and night. Grand Central Station, the Brooklyn Bridge, United Nations Headquarters, the Unisphere in Queens and Radio City Music Hall are all on the tourist trail and definitely worth a visit. Take a trip to Wall Street, the world's financial capital and home of the New York Stock Exchange and don't miss some discreet and indulgent shopping on 5th Avenue and Madison Avenue. New York is a vibrant and electric cultural centre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the largest in the world. Carnegie Hall, Broadway and 42nd Street and the Lincoln Centre for performing arts all host world class events and showcase stars and artists of the highest calibre and international renown. Sports fans will be in heaven when the New York Giants or the New York Jets play in the National Football League and, of course, Major League Baseball sees enormous rivalry with The New York Yankees (in the Bronx) and New York Mets (in Queens).
