Capital of Austria, Vienna is at once stunningly historical yet modern and vibrant. Long known for its wonderful buildings, gorgeous squares, completely over the top Baroque interiors and intricate facades, it is not hard to imagine Vienna as the home of the Hapsburg Dynasty. Also the city of Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven, Haydn et al, the musical influence that Vienna wields is world renowned and the ultimate treat, of course, is a trip to the Viennese Opera. However, don't be fooled that Vienna is all about dusty history and lovely architecture, the lively cafe culture which spills onto the streets gives the city its natural pulse and is a dominant feature throughout. Atmospheric coffee houses, complete with old-fashioned, polite waiters are everywhere and a frothy cappuchino and a slice of sachertorte is a de rigueur pit-stop for the busy sightseer! Vienna is beautifully planned and laid out with many green spaces and parkland. The romantic Danube flows along close to the historic centre, so romance is palpable. Definitely a city for walkers, Vienna is easily managed on foot and is doubtless worth a few days of delightful exploration. Flanked by Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Italy, Switzerland and Germany, this little capital city that can hold its own amongst the best in Europe. Vienna is definitely a force to be reckoned with!
