Riva is like a pretty dichotomy - a delightful medieval face that is relaxed, ancient and unhurried, yet with a bustling and modern atmosphere with locals and visitors milling about in the business of living and leisure. Cobbled streets, historic buildings, open piazzas and meandering alleyways are the hallmark of the town and the beautiful lake front is the icing on the cake.
Traces of ancient conquerors have left many reminders and defence fortresses dating back to 1124 are still visible today. The Bastione fortress at the heel of Mount Rocchetta is a local focal point for great views over the town and particularly of Piazza Catena. Another historic landmark is La Rocca fortess which is enveloped by a little moat and now houses the museum.
If the lure of shopping or people watching in the piazzas wanes, then stroll to the lake shore here all manner of watery pursuits await. Sailing and windsurfing are most popular, but the area attracts many walkers and cyclists.
Located just a short distance from Riva, the smallest mountain in the mighty Dolomite range, Monte Brione, is almost midway between the town and nearby Torbole. Rock climbing and mountain biking are popular pastimes.
Think of renting a car as the resorts of Salo on the west coast and the town of Garda itself, Lazise and Peschiera del Garda on the southeastern shore are notable and worthy of exploration. The resorts are extremely picturesque and each has a charm all it's own.
There are no flights into Riva, but Aer Lingus has regular flights from Dublin direct into Verona airport.
