Located on the northern shores of Lake Garda, Torbole is best known as a windsurfers paradise due to the favourable winds that skirt the lakeside. Sailing is another huge pastime in the area, but conditions are deemed near perfect for windsurfing enthusiasts. Even the German writer, Goethe, waxed lyrical about the winds and called them one of the wonders of nature!
The topography of the area is impressive as Monte Baldo, a ridge of the Italian Alps is close by and therefore attracts climbers, hikers, mountain bikers and walkers and the terrain can be challenging and ever interesting.
Starting life like many other tourist resorts, Torbole was once a teeny, sleepy local fishing hamlet with very little activity apart from the landing of the daily local catch. Today, the tiny harbour mouth is a picture postcard montage of bobbing boats and colourful fishing craft. The old Custom House is still standing and adds an air of history to the scene.
Close to Riva which is further to the north and slightly west, visitors to Torbole can enjoy boat trips to other lakeside towns and villages. Garda town, Lazise and Peschiera del Garda are well worth the trip south and Salo on the west coast is a lovely historic town.#
There are no flights into Torbole, but Aer Lingus operates direct flights from Dublin into Verona airport, approx 1 hour away.
