A near neighbour of Taormina, the little resort of Letojanni is only 5 klms away and a regular bus service operates between the two approx. every 20 minutes. Located on the north east coast of Sicily, the resort is less well known than others, so in terms of Sicily holidays, it is recommended as a laid back and relaxing venue.
A romantic destination, Letojanni is not overly commercialised and, although it has its share of restaurants, shops and cafes, both Taormina and Giardini Naxos have a better selection of amenities and are worth exploring.
Holidays to Sicily are known for warm hospitality, great scenery and delicious cuisine and Letojanni has all these ingredients. Traditional home cooked Sicilian food is on the menu in the local restaurants. Imagine a glass of chilled wine on a romantic terrace overlooking the sea and already, holidays in Letojanni are beckoning.
The beach in Letojanni is sand shingle and the sea is clear as a turquoise teardrop. The veil of romance is so heavy over the resort that D.H. Lawrence is said to have written Lady Chatterly's Lover here sometime in the 1920's. The area also inspired Goethe and Guy de Maupassant, so holidays to Italy and Sicily in particular can enjoy many literary connections.
Another charming feature of Letojanni is its historical past and the relics of lovely old buildings. The neo-Gothic parish church (built in Travertin marble), dedicted to the patron saint, San Guiseppe, is fascinating and the village is reputed to have one of the most spectacular "piazzas" in all of Italy. Piazza Durante The piazza, dotted with palm trees, swarms with the local lovelies having a stroll and is the perfect place for people watching.
There are no flights to Letojanni, but direct flights from Dublin to Catania ensure the resort is accessible.
