Thinking of a holiday to Fuerteventura and looking for quick overview of what to expect? You’ve come to the right place! Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands, famous for its long sandy beaches and towering sand dunes. The main resort of Corralejo can be found in the north of the island, and while it has a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere, there are dozens of great restaurants and cafes, bars with decent live music, Irish pubs for watching the match, and a beach ideal for water sports, all right on your doorstep.

Once a sleepy fishing village, the resort is popular with holiday-makers from mainland Europe. As it’s not a typical party place, clubbing culture is not a big part of the lifestyle here. In the old town by the harbour, a number of restaurants are dotted around “Music Square” – aptly named because of the free nightly entertainment – where you’re more likely to see amorous couples sipping cocktails and two-stepping sweetly over the cobblestones than young hedonists heading to the disco.

Fuerteventura Holidays - Corralejo HarbourThe resort of Corralejo is pretty self-contained and spotlessly clean – everything you need is within walking distance. There are plenty of shops like Mango and Esprit, supermarkets for buying groceries or duty-free items, such as perfumes, cigarettes, and alcohol, but be prepared to haggle over prices of luxury buys.

The white sandy beach stretches for miles and the shallow waters make it safe for small paddlers. The windy conditions ensure its popularity with windsurfers, while the skies above the dunes are filled with the sails of colourful kites – there is even a kite flying festival that takes place here every year!

If you feel like venturing further afield, explorers can take a short ferry ride from the modern marina to the nearby islands of Lanzarote or Isla de Lobos for an interesting day trip. Lying to the north, Lanzarote is a quick 30-minute boat trip and costs approximately €22 return.

Eat & Drink

  • El Toro Bravo – beside the Corralejo Beach Aparthotel.
  • La Tahona Steak House – central location in Music Square.
  • Sotavento – fabulous waterside setting.
  • Corner Rock Bar – great live music.
  • La Casita – famous for their tasty ‘gambas al ajillo’ (garlic prawns).

What’s the weather like?

Due to its close proximity to the African coast, it’s not surprising that Fuerteventura enjoys 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, with similar weather to Mexico and Florida.  If you prefer cooler temperatures at night, spring and autumn are a good time to visit. Like the other Canary Islands, its year-round sunshine makes it a popular destination for winter sun holidays.
