Nerja
Nerja Holidays - At the eastern tip of Costa del Sol, Nerja lies about 60km from Malaga at the end of the coastal highway. A refreshing change from the very well known resorts of the west side of the Costa, Nerja is fast becoming more popular and, even though it is certainly no shrinking violet in terms of visitor assets, neither is it full of high rise and downright brashness. Nerja is a "cool customer" on Spain's Costa del Sol.
Nonetheless, long gone is the ultra quaint teeny fishing hamlet although some charming streets and alleys still survive with balconied whitewashed houses, lush with scarlet pelargoniums and trailing bougainvillea. These little gems have maintained Nerja's charm and have helped it avoid the over zealous image of blatant tourist trap.
Part of the drama of the resort is it's renowned "Balcon de Europa" (Balcony of Europe), a lovely promenade built along a cliff, affording magnificent views up and down the coast. The sweeping panoramic vistas have a backdrop of the Almijara mountains, so there is natural beauty in abundance.
Hop in a horsedrawn carriage to wander the old quarter of Nerja or simply explore one of the many coves and inlets and relax on a delightful sandy beach. There is no shortage of excellent restaurants and the countless bars offer great variety when the sun goes down, a typical feature of great holidays in Costa del Sol.
Just 6km away, Frigiliana is a picturesque traditional white village and the famous Caves of Nerja are a fascinating attraction and boast 20.000 year old paintings. Whilst Nerja's local charms will entrance, there is also a more modern side with large hotels and plenty of pubs and some fast food outlets. The resort is therefore capable of catering to international tastes, yet it somehow does not lose the intrinsic Spanish feel of a local "pueblo". There are no flights to Nerja, but frequent direct flights to Malaga from Ireland guarantee that visitors can put Nerja on their holiday itinerary.
Costa del Sol's Nerja may not be so well known as the other resorts of Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola or Marbella, but it is a lovely choice for an enjoyable holiday. Check out our great range of Costa del Sol hotels.
