Destinations / City Breaks / Montreal

Montreal is the second-largest city in Canada, located in the province of Quebec in the southeastern part of the country. It is a truly cosmopolitan city with a robust French colonial history evidenced by its mostly French-speaking inhabitants. It is a charismatic city that oozes charm and joviality, making it a modern Canadian city worth visiting. Experience the exhilarating mix of European and North American flavours and relish in this city that is full of uninhibited creativity and excitement. It is a juggernaut of Canadian culture and is simply plein de vie. Bienvenue à Montréal!

Things to do in Montreal

  • Visit a museum because there is a plethora to choose from. The Pointe-à-Callière, otherwise known as the Museum of Archaeology and History, the McCord Museum of Canadian History, and the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts are all notable.
  • Roam into any and all of the churches to discover why famed author, Mark Twain, coined Montreal “a city where you couldn’t throw a brick without breaking a church window.” One of the most famous is Basilique Notre-Dame, a beautiful neo-gothic structure (and fun fact: it’s where Celine Dion got married).
  • Eat some poutine…because you can’t go to Canada without trying it. It is a dish consisting of chips smothered in cheese curds and gravy.
  • Take a wander around to take in all the incredible architecture. From the 18th century beauty of Old Montreal (make sure to hit St. Paul Street!) to the dazzling downtown, see this incredibly walkable city by employing your own two feet.
  • Experience just why this city has a reputation as a centre for the arts by catching a show at any of the hundreds of theatres or plan your holiday in line with any of the various festivals hosted in Montreal.
  • Go up the Plateau Mont-Royal. It is a lovely walk and the views from the Belvedere observatory are stunning.
  • Walk within RÉSO, also known as Montreal’s underground city. It is an impressive feat of urban planning and is 32-kilometre network of tunnels that connect many buildings in Montreal’s business district.
  • Temper your shopping bug in Montreal’s Mile End. There are plenty of cafes and boutiques to keep one busy all day.
