Koh Samui

Thailand Holidays from Ireland

Picture postcard pretty, Koh Samui will take your breath away. This stunningly beautiful Thai island (the largest after Phuket) is a holiday destination that is the stuff of dreams. Holidays in Koh Samui are heaven sent for honeymooners, culture lovers, beach lovers, sun lovers and just plain lovers!  Icing sugar white beaches, swaying coconut palms, dazzling turquoise waters and coral reefs are the daily attractions, add in a dollop of famous Thai hospitality, serve it all with a beaming smile and a fabulous holiday in Koh Samui is born!

Sometimes just called Samui, the island is part of a large archipelago in the Gulf of Thailand and is 25k at its widest point. The very centre is thick, almost impenetrable tropical jungle, but the coastline has excellent beaches and indented coves. The main port, Nathan, is the commercial hub of the island but the main tourist attraction is Chaweng Beach, a 5k stretch where cafes, restaurants, shops, stalls, markets, clubs, music halls and bars sprawl all the way along. Chaweng is non-stop party vibe. Lamai beach is slightly less crowded, but is still fun in the sun. Beaches on the north and east of Koh Samui are generally less frenetic in pace.

Koh Samui has something for everyone and the laid back, ultra relaxed ambience is a huge draw for many visitors. Holidays in Koh Samui are a complete study in enjoyment! As a gentle aside to worldly pleasures, intricate temples with golden Buddhas provide moments of reflection to soul search, make a flower offering, admire carvings or simply immerse momentarily in a different culture.

The Samui Regatta is an annual sailing event with international participants competing in this renowned tournament. The Ten Stars Art Party brings a focus on artists and works of art, both local and international, introducing culture with upmarket hotel exhibitions.

Koh Samui has immense natural beauty with cascading waterfalls and interesting rock formations. There are plenty of guided tours in order to discover and explore the island and it is always nice to get out an about and meet the locals too. Take a leisurely boat trip, go on an excorted jungle tour or try elephant trekking - everything is possible on Samui holidays. Visit a snake farm, monkey theatre or butterfly farm. If at all possible, go diving or snorkelling as the coral beds and pristine reefs are genuinely rich in strikingly colourful marine life. The delicate frond of sea anemones, the lacy frill of coral or the sudden sighting of a parrot fish is the prize for braving the lukewarm waters of intense blue.

Just imagine a delicious Thai dinner at sunset on the beach with the flicker of candlelight and lap of the waves as company - this is the essence of a holiday in Koh Samui.
