Strapped for cash but dying for an August break? Sunny cities are a fantastic option for a quick getaway that won’t break the bank. Combine great weather with a good dollop of culture, delicious local food and wine and fabulous attractions and you’ve got a recipe for the perfect holiday this August. One of the busiest months in terms of the number of people travelling, we’ve sussed out the best-value cities for this time of year.

1. Barcelona

Beach hotel barelonaBarcelona in August is a relaxed and laid back Mediterranean playground – famous for the Park Guell,  Gaudi’s unique architecture and the Picasso museum. Many of the locals have left the city for their summer holidays – meaning less crowds and more space to enjoy the arts and culture of the vibrant Catalan capital. Barcelona city centre hotels can be excellent value for money – choose one with a rooftop pool, like the excellent 4* Expo Barcelona, and spend time sunbathing with a spectacular view of the skyline. Another option is one of the beach hotels along the city’s beautiful coastline. A perfect escape from the warm weather – enjoy the nautical backdrop of the iconic W hotel (shaped like a sail), the cool sea breeze and the many beach cafes, during a summer stroll along the shoreline.

2. Madrid

Madrid Buen Retiro ParkAugust is the best time to visit Madrid’s amazing museums – from the Prado, the Reina Sofia (where Guernica is housed), the Thyssen and the National Archaeological museum – surround yourself with priceless art and ancient artefacts for a day. To beat the summer heat, rise early for a sight-seeing tour, then take long leisurely lunches sipping Tinto de Verano (red wine with ice and soda water), followed by a swift siesta or rest-stop in the idyllic Buen Retiro park. Once the sun goes down, hit the many tapas bars in La Latina quarter and party like the locals until late into the night.

3. Rome

If you’re visiting Rome in August, remember that many small restaurants and shops may close as part of Ferragosto ( Aug 15-Sept 1) – the traditional summer holiday period dating back to Emperor Agustus.  Not to panic – the main tourist attractions like the Colosseum and the Roman Forum will be open for visitors throughout the month. Some museums like the Vatican may close for a day or two, so if you’re heart is set on visiting a particular sight – double check before you go. The many souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes around Piazza Navona and St Mark’s Square will still be open for business. And if you’re looking for a place to cool off from the August heat – the 5* Radisson Blu Es has a stunning rooftop pool – a perfect chill-out spot to enjoy a glass of Prosecco after a busy day exploring the Eternal City.

4. Berlin

Berlin Outdoor swimmingVisit Berlin in August and you’re in for a treat – as concerts and festivals take to the streets, beer-gardens abound for al fresco drinking, and hip urban beaches and swimming pools can be found in the centre of  city – like the famous Badeschiff swimming pool in the Spree! After dark, the city comes alive in August with cool rooftop bars and open-air clubs to dance the night away – while enjoying breath-taking views of the city.

An August break to Barcelona, Berlin, Rome or Madrid is the perfect combination of sun and city – where you can see the cultural sights in the morning, then head to the beach, park or rooftop pool.
