After a summer of staycations, we decided to conduct a price comparison on two holiday deals, one in Ireland and one in Spain. This would demonstrate the difference in cost between staycations and overseas holidays, as consumers begin to gradually return to international travel.

Staycation vs Holiday Abroad

We compared a week in a four-star hotel in southern Ireland with a week in the 4-star VIK San Antonio in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote, and found that in addition to being cheaper, consumers would also find better value for money when choosing to book a holiday abroad.

For €683 per person, prospective holidaymakers could book seven nights in the VIK San Antonio, including bed and breakfast, dinner each night and return Aer Lingus flights from Dublin. A similar 7 night holiday in a well-known hotel in the south of Ireland would cost €859, which is €176 more expensive per person and does not include transport or dinners.

We currently have multiple dates in September for 7 nights in the VIK San Antonio in Lanzarote, priced at €699 per person or less depending on booking dates.

“I understand the importance of supporting domestic tourism in Ireland, however, the price point of many staycations offers are simply too high and consumers would get much better value for their money on a holiday abroad. As we have demonstrated with this comparison, you get more value for less money on a holiday to Lanzarote than you would if you stayed in Ireland.”

There are plenty of dates left for travel in September and October. We are seeing the demand for late bookings increase as many people are making bookings for last-minute holidays abroad. As always, we encourage consumers to check the current COVID-19 guidelines of their planned destination before booking a holiday.
