Destinations / City Breaks / Kaunas

Kaunas is the second-largest Lithuanian city, located in the south-central part of the country. The city sits at the junction of the two largest Lithuanian rivers, the Nemunas and the Neris. It was named the European Capital of Culture 2022 and there is no surprise as to why considering it contains some pretty impressive architecture, quirky museums, and other places and things to do that give homage to its complex history.

Delve into a history lesson, enjoy a leisurely bike ride, or simply waltz along the promenades and streets in search of some hidden-gem-type places in order to unfurl all that this amazing Baltic city has to offer.

Things to do in Kaunas

  • Meander down Laisves Aleja, a main shopping avenue and pedestrian street lined with trees and a multitude of shops and restaurants. This will lead you right into Kaunas’ Old Town where you will be surrounded by medieval architectural design with a bit of German influence. Most notably, the Hanseatic House of Perkūnas is a beautiful original Gothic building located in the Old Town.
  • Take a walk around Santakos Park and visit the ruins of the 13th-century Kaunas Castle.
  • Although located a little outside the city, the Ninth Fort memorial built atop a fort that protected Kaunas during the interwar period is worth a visit. Here, you can learn a bit more about Lithuanian history and the contentious and dark role this fort played during WWII.
  • Visit the largest church complex and monastery, Pazaislis Monastery, located 7 km outside the city centre and has survived many tumultuous times.
  • Marvel at the ornate detail that covers the interior of the Kaunas Cathedral Basilica
  • Learn a bit of Lithuanian history with a visit to the Presidential Palace
  • Kaunas has gone to great lengths to make itself one of the most bike-friendly cities in the Baltics, so it will be worth it to take a leisurely bike ride to see the city.
  • Go shopping – especially for some beautiful pieces made of amber, which Lithuania is known for.
