Destinations / City Breaks / Murcia

Murcia is located in southeastern Spain and is a delightful destination for a city break. Holidays in Murcia, situated on Spain's Costa Calida, have the ideal ingredients as the climate lives up to it's coastal nomer (calida means balmy!) with hot summers and mild winters. Travel in Murcia is pleasant all year round and the city throws up many amenities for the visitor.

A city break in Murcia has many attractions and the area's strategic location is key. Almost midway between Alicante (think Benidorm for legendary nightlife and brilliant beaches) to the north and Cartagena (a wonderfully historic naval port with Roman ruins and a rich past) to the south, the region of Murcia has a fortunate position and if the delights of the city itself are not enough, there are plenty of interesting sites within easy access. The pleasures of Mar Menor, Europe's largest lagoon, is about 30 miles away and worth a little detour for the reputed theraputic waters.

Murcia is a University city, so student life ensures a great vibe and youthful bustle, not to talk of the creative and cultural element that a young population brings. The Old Town is very atmospheric and pedestrian friendly with narrow meandering streets, tall buildings and quaint shops and local cafes.

Pride of place in Murcia city is the highly ornate Cathedral with its eclectic mix of architectural styles from Spanish Baroque, Renaissance, Neoclassical and Rococco to Gothic. Dominating the Plaza Cardinal Belluga, the Cathedral is a real show stopper. Renowned for fabulous festivals and local fiestas, Murcia hosts a Holy Week procession which is amongst the most famous in all Spain. Equally well known and quirky is the Burial of the Sardine festival!

An inland city, Murcia is beside the Segura River and the region is often referred to as Europe's Orchard because agriculture is very important here and the range of fresh produce (tomatoes, grapes, fruit and flowers) is superb. Not only exported all over Europe, Murcia naturally benefits as local cuisine is delicious. Be sure to try the local grape too as Jumilla wines are excellent.

If family members get itchy feet, the marvellous theme parks of Terra Natura (two zoo and aqua parks) and Terra Mitica (Egypt, Rome and Greece themed park with breathtaking rides and spectacles) are both located close to Benidorm and are great fun days out.

With direct flights to Murcia from Ireland, short breaks and longer holidays are easily accessible. ClickandGo provides a selection of accommodation in the area.
