City breaks to Santiago de Compostela - Situated in north west Spain in the region of Galicia, Santiago de Compostela is one of the best know pilgrimage sites in all Europe. Capital of Galicia, the Cathedral is the focus as the important medieval pilgrimage route since the 9th century, the Way of St James or the "Camino" is it is known today. The Old Town in the city was also deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985.
This is full of charming, narrow and meandering streets, atmospheric plazas and ancient buildings with huge historical significance. The city also has a University with a vibrant population which breathes lots of life and results in very lively and interesting nightlife. The Camino de Santiago is a network of pilgrim routes which stretches across Europe, ending at the tomb of St James.
There are various stages of the Camino with various levels of walking difficulty and the pilgrimage is undertaken for various different reasons! There are walking routes which focus solely on Spain's northern coast, some which include France and others Portugal. Some of the popular routes get very crowded in high summer and the varying degrees of challenge presented to walkers should be carefully considered before setting out. Many walkers like to take in Finisterre (literally menaing the end of the earth!"), which you might recognise from radio weather reports!
A visit to Santiago de Compostela need not necessarily be driven by religious motives and there are many other attractions in the city which feature excellent cuisine, good local wines, cultural and historical sights and shopping options, so there is something here to suit all tastes.
