The Dubrovnik Riviera is a place of immense natural beauty. Imagine a coastline that is indented with private coves, shrouded in pine-clad hills, lapped by a sea that is at once turquoise and ultramarine and littered with off-shore islands. A Dubrovnik Riviera holiday is an exercise in sensory perceptions where vision is optimised with the number of wonderful vistas and lovely landscapes.

Many superlatives describe Dubrovnik and it is, of course, "The Pearl of the Adriatic" and even George Bernard Shaw proclaimed:"If you want to see paradise on earth, come to Dubrovnik". The city is stunningly dramatic and picturesque and holidays to Croatia should always include at least a cursory visit. The entire Dalmatian Coast is really physically beautiful and worth exploring at leisure.

Jutting as a picturesque promontory dipping its toes in the Adriatic, the old city of Dubrovnik is protected by massively thick walls built between the 13th and 17th centuries and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Medieval style cobblestoned streets, meandering alleys, baroque buildings and marble squares all huddle within the walls and provide the most atmospheric location for strolling and enjoying pavement cafe culture. Dubrovnik is busy in summer months and many large cruise ships visit to disgorge their passengers for day trips.

Outside Dubrovnik's walls, the landscape is quite hilly and covered in lovely pine forests and the coastline is indented with secluded coves and beaches. The little resort of Lapad is relaxing and enjoyable. Offshore, there are many islands where boat trips operate on a regular basis - highly recommended for a quick visit or a few days stay. Try our own Dalmatian Highlights cruise for a truly memorable trip.

The little resort of Cavtat (15 km south) has become popular as a tourist haunt where the beach is pebbly and the infrastructure is well developed. Huddled around a sheltered cove, Cavtat is a very pretty town which gets immensely busy in summer months. Stroll along the boardwalk, sip a coffee at one of the elegant cafes or enjoy a leisurely lunch in a delightful open-air restaurant. Accessible to Dubrovnik by local bus or short ferry ride, a holiday in Cavtat is relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable.

Holidays in Mlini are delightfully tranquil and the whole atmosphere is redolent of pure relaxation. The phrase "blink and you miss it" could relate to Mlini as the village is tiny, has a delicious local ambience and the feeling that time stands still is palpable. Virtually untouched by crass commercialism, a Mlini holiday is an experience of local Croatian life where a mild climate, beautiful natural surroundings and a laid back atmosphere await the eager visitor.

Dubrovnik Riviera is full of historical treasures, magnificent monuments and local museums, so Croatia holidays can be full of sightseeing, beach relaxation and shopping for lovely crafts and souvenirs. The waters along the coast are ultra clean, turquoise and translucent, so swimming and sailing are heavenly.
