Holidays to Cancun offer a tantalising taste of Mexico. Located on the south-eastern tip of the country in the Yucatan peninsula, Cancun is in the state of Quintana Roo and overlooks the shimmering turquoise expanses of the Caribbean on one side and the Nichupte lagoon on the opposite side.
Cancun holidays are heaven sent for enjoying powdery white sand beaches, sparkling water and part of the world's 2nd longest coral reef. Just think of the diving and snorkelling opportunities here. With an underwater world scarcely rivalled elsewhere, the waters around Cancun are home to dolphins, whale sharks, turtles and many big game fish. There are plenty of boat trips available, excursions on the lagoon and even a ferry connection to the nearby island of Isla Mujeres.
Gateway to the Riviera Maya and the interior of Yucatan, the wonderful archaeological sites of Chichen Itza, Coba and Tulum are all easily accessible and bring the amazing Mayan culture to life with all its fabulous legends and historical riches. Cancun is also close to the stunning eco-archaeological park of Xcaret which is a tropical paradise of flora and fauna, a mesh of underground rivers, a butterfly pavilion, orchid greenhouse and jaguar island. It's possible to snorkel here, explore the underground river network and even swim with dolphins. An unmissable trip for nature lovers.
The resort of Cancun itself is concentrated on a long narrow strip of land, locally called the Hotel Zone. Downtown Cancun is the local city (good bus connections) but the Hotel Zone is where visitors frequent the excellent restaurants, lively bars and commercial shopping outlets.
Holidays to Cancun are popular with US visitors and many American high school graduates flock here for spring and summer breaks, so the resort can be very lively at these times. A tropical climate guarantees a warm sea and boundless sunshine, but the odd hurricane has been known to pass by Cancun, so don't take Mother Nature for granted!
