Sesimbra

Sesimbra is a wonderful hidden gem of a holiday destinations. Located just 40kms south of Lisbon on Portugal's west coast in the Setubal district of Costa Azul, Sesimbra has long been a favourite holiday destination of the city crowd who want to escape the summer heat.

Sesimbra is situated at the foot of the Serra da Arrabida mountains and at the mouth of the Sado River, so a deep natural inlet and bay has created the livelihood for local fishermen and boosted a small fishing industry. Once a tiny fishing hamlet, Sesimbra today has lost none of its charm and, due to its narrow and sometimes steep streets, still has all the look and ambience of a very attractive local fishing community.

Blessed with a beautiful coastline and broad beaches with dramatic cliffs as backdrop, Sesimbra is a popular seaside destination for local Portuguese and now visitors from northern Europe are exploring the delights of this pretty little town. The fishing connection means the traditional restaurants have the best and freshest seafood and fish.

A holiday in Sesimbra promises amazing food, warm and friendly ambience, a nice evening stroll on the seaside promenade or its smart marina and, of course, superb value for money. The surrounding area has densely wooded hills that lead to sandy beaches and clean, shimmering waters and, on the west side, there are huge towering cliffs where powerful waves hit the rocks, so the power and beauty of nature is evident at every turn.

Sesimbra is sure to charm you. Visit the exquisite local churches where the congregation still prays for the safety of the fishermen and a good catch. Hike in Arrabida National Park, take an adventurous bike ride over the steep hills or enjoy the lazier option of a scenic drive through the park to marvel at the breathtaking views of the ocean. Drive to Cabo de Espichel where a huge lighthouse and monastery complex is another enjoyable excursion.
