Destinations / Ski, Lakes & Mountains / Alpe d'Huez (France)
Located in the central French Alps, Alpe d'Huez is often referred to as "L'Ile au Soleil" (Island in the Sun!) as most of its marvellous ski slopes have a southerly orientation. This is an all-round lifestyle resort, suitable for families and great for younger skiers who enjoy vibrant apres ski activity.
Alpe d'Huez ticks all the boxes for many levels of skiing as beginner, intermediate and advanced runs are available. Skiing in France is always a pleasure as facilities are excellent and the villages are totally geared for winter sporting activities. Snow pursuits aside, Ale d'Huez also offers a cinema, lively bars, fun nightclubs, a huge outdoor swimming pool and a mega skating rink. Further amenities on offer include a sports centre, ice cave, parapenting (a bit like paragliding!), ice driving, snow mobiles, ski-dooing and sledging slope. Adventure sporting persons take good note!
The ski resort of Alpe d'Huez even boasts the longest ski run in the world. Sarenne is 16 klms long and should provide excitement and challenge for even the most daring. Situated on the southern flank of Grandes Rousses Massif, Alpe d'Huez is guaranteed to provide a lot of winter fun in the snow and, whatever your level of expertise, you are bound to stay active and enjoy all the amenities of this spectacular area.
