Destinations / Ski, Lakes & Mountains / Lake Annecy (France)

Annecy holidays bring south east France to a whole new level and, hopefully, a brand new audience! Located in the Haute Savoie area in the Rhone-Alpes region, this delightful resort sits at the northen tip of Lake Annecy (Lac D'Annecy). Perhaps one of France's most delightful small cities, Annecy is pretty and picturesque and is actually often referred to as the Alpine Venetia. Dissected by narrow canals and stream running out of the lake, the town centre is truly beautiful and is not unlike a mini Venice!

The medieval heart and Old Town is completely bewitching and resembles a warren of meandering streets with colourful arcaded houses dating from the 16th century. Built around a 14th century Chateau, Annecy Castle overlooks the Old Town in a protective manner. Tiny narrow alleyways throw up gems of historical interest and there are lovely local restaurants, traditional bistros and pavement cafes at every turn. People watching is an art form and the town maintains its beauty by encouraging flower-filled balconies and bridges which tumble with scarlet pelargoniums and vivid bougainvillea.

The Palais d'Isle - a former palace, but now a prison, sits gracefully like a huge stone ship bisecting the town. Another landmark is the Church of Saint Maurice. Explore Annecy's alleys and lane-ways though to window shop, stop for coffee or simply enjoy the pedestrianised streets which house trendy boutiques, antique shops and locals stores. There are many outdoor markets in the summer months, attracting visitors and locals alike. Food, antiques, curios and bric-a-brac stalls are great for browsing and souvenir hunting.

Holidays in Annecy are paradise for walkers, cyclists and history buffs. The gorgeous lake is the big attraction for outdoor pursuits with swimming, hiking, biking, sailing and hang-gliding the most popular sports. There are nice cruises on Lac D'Annecy too and you can enjoy a full circuit of the lake or simply take a lunch cruise to enjoy a few hour's sightseeing.

The summer weather is usually perfect for enjoying the great outdoors in this beautiful and popular resort town of the French Alps. Your summer holiday in Annecy will surely entrance you.

Ther are no direct flights to Annecy, but Aer Lingus operates regular flights to Geneva which is only 35 klms away. We offer a good range of accommodation in this pretty resort.
