Lanzarote is a perennial favourite with Irish holiday-makers, and as it’s one of our top two destinations at ClickandGo, we thought we’d provide a whistle-stop tour of the island and some of its top resorts.

One of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote lies off the coast of Morocco and is a 4-hour flight from Ireland. There are Aer Lingus flights to Arrecife (the capital) from Dublin (Monday to Saturday) and Cork (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday).

One of the reasons why holidays to Lanzarote are so popular is that it’s a “something for everyone” kind of place. Whether you’re looking for lively nightlife, a spot of luxury and relaxation, outdoor pursuits or a family getaway, a holiday in Lanzarote should tick the box. Also, Lanzarote is a year-round destination as popular for summer breaks as it is for winter sun holidays.

Here are the top five resorts on the island, where they are and where we’d recommend.

Puerto del Carmen

Just a 15-minute drive from Arrecife airport, Puerto Del Carmen is Lanzarote’s original and busiest resort with golden sandy beaches, a huge selection of bars, restaurants and clubs and a lively nightlife.

For good quality budget accommodation, we recommend the San Francisco Park Apartments. Note that this is an adults only apartment complex that does not allow under 16s.

Costa Teguise

20 minutes north of Arrecife Airport, Costa Teguise is a laid-back resort with a more sedate nightlife than Puerto del Carmen. Apparently, the King of Spain, Juan Carlos I, owns a villa here, so you never know who you might run in to.

For family holidays, we highly recommend the Sands Beach Resort in Costa Teguise.

Matagorda

Just a ten-minute drive from the airport and about 6km from Puerto del Carmen, Matagorda is a relaxed resort with dark sandy beaches.

We recommend: The Beatriz Playa and Spa in Matagorda is our most popular hotel bar none with the hundreds of satisfied holiday-makers going there each year. Note that the hotel often offers special over 50s deals that are well worth checking out if you fall into that age bracket.

Playa Blanca

With its white sandy beaches, Playa Blanca is a more upmarket resort on the southern tip of the island, about 30 minutes from the airport. A 20-minute ferry trip will see you on the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura.

For a 5* luxury holiday we recommend the Princesa Yaiza in Playa Blanca, winner of a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice award in 2013.

Playa de los Pocillos

Just 10 minutes from the airport, Playa de los Pocillos is a tranquil and relaxed resort but lies just 3km from the hustle bustle of Puerto del Carmen.

We recommend the Seaside Los Jameos Playa, winner of a 2013 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence award.
