Barcelona Cruise Port: Key Things to Know

Getting to Barcelona Cruise Port

How Far is Barcelona Airport from the Cruise Port?

Barcelona EL Prat Airport sits approximately 13km from the city centre, and the cruise terminals are located at the southern end of La Rambla in the port district known as the Moll Adossat. Depending on the traffic, you are looking at around 20-30 minutes by taxi – and this is comfortably the most straightforward option when you are travelling with luggage.

Transport Options from Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port

  • By Taxi: For first time cruisers arriving with suitcases, a taxi is the best way to get to the port from the airport. The journey takes approximately 20-30 minutes and costs around €30-€40. Some cruise lines also offer a transfer option to take you to and from the port.
  • By Metro: If you’re travelling light or heading into the city before embarkation, you can take Metro Line 9 from the airport, transfer at Zona Universitaria onto Line 3, and alight at Drassanes – the final stop at the end of La Rambla. From there, it is a short walk to the port shuttle bus stop. This is a budget-friendly option but not recommended if you are travelling with large suitcases.

Our Expert Recommendation: Arrive in Barcelona the Day before your Cruise

This is the single most important piece of advice we give to every customer cruising from Barcelona – arrive the night before your departure.

Barcelona is one of Europe’s most extraordinary cities. The architecture, the food, the culture, the atmosphere – it deserves more than a rushed transit on embarkation morning. An overnight stay also means that flight delays, traffic or unexpected holdups wont impact your cruise holiday. You arrive relaxed, rested, and ready – which is exactly how your holiday should begin.

Our Cruise specialists are here 7 days a week to help find you the perfect accommodation for your pre cruise/post cruise stay.

Understanding the Barcelona Cruise Port Terminals

Each Cruise ship sailing from Barcelona is assigned its own terminal building, and your embarkation experience will begin there.

How Many Terminals does Barcelona Cruise Port Have?

This is one of the most common questions we receive from first time cruisers and rightly so, because Barcelona is a large, busy cruise port with multiple terminals spread across the Moll Adossat dock.

The main passenger terminals – Terminal A, Terminal B, Terminal C, and Terminal D – are all located along the Moll Adossat, accessed via the Porta d’Europa bridge. Each terminal handles different cruise lines and sailings, so knowing your terminal is essential.

Each cruise ship sailing from Barcelona is assigned its own terminal building, meaning your embarkation experience will begin at the specific terminal linked to your cruise line.

Barcelona welcomes a wide range of cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), Celebrity Cruises and more, all operating from these terminals throughout the year. While the terminal may differ, the embarkation process remains very similar across all cruise line – organised, efficient and clearly signposted for guests.

MSC Cruises operate from a dedicated, purpose-built terminal in Barcelona, offering a particularly modern and streamlined embarkation experience – but regardless of cruise line, the overall process at the port is designed to be smooth and stress-free.

Your cruise line’s app or joining instructions will confirm your specific terminal before travel. Always check this – arriving at the wrong end of a large cruise port with a family’s worth of luggage is not the start to a holiday that anyone wants.

Not sure how to check your terminal? Call us and speak to one of our cruise specialists who will guide you to finding your terminal information in the app.

The Embarkation Process: Step by Step

Step 1: Luggage Drop-Off at the Port

One of the first things that surprises first-time cruisers is the luggage process and it is a very pleasant surprise. When you arrive at your terminal, you do not carry your main suitcases onto the ship yourself. Port crew will take your bags, tag them with your cabin number and arrange for them to be delivered directly to your cabin later that day.

It is seamless, it is efficient, and it immediately sets the tone for the kind of holiday a cruise is – one where details are taken care of for you.

Step 2: Pack a Day Bag – This is Essential Cruise Advice

Because your main luggage will not arrive in your cabin until later in the afternoon, every experienced cruiser and every member of our Click&Go Holidays team – will tell you the same thing – pack a day bag with your essentials in it that you will need throughout the day.

Team Tip from Kathleen, our Brand Manager

Always pack a day bag with everything you need for your first few hours onboard – it means you can start enjoying your holiday straight away without waiting for your luggage to arrive.

We recommend including:

  • Your swimsuit.
  • High-factor sun cream – particularly important for Mediterranean sailings.
  • A comfortable change of clothes to change into.
  • Any prescription medications you need to hand.
  • Your travel documents, phone and charger

Your suitcases will be with you well before dinner. In the meantime, this small bag is your ticket to making the most of every hour from the moment you step onboard.

Step 3: Online Check-in and the Cruise Line App

The cruise check-in process has evolved significantly in recent years, and most of it now takes place in advance through your cruise line’s dedicated app. Before you even arrive at the port, you will have uploaded your passport details, confirmed your personal information, selected dining preferences and completed the bulk of your registration.

This means that when you arrive at the check-in desk, the process is quick and straightforward. Have your passport and booking confirmation ready and you will be through in just a few minutes.

This is something our Cruise Specialists will walk you through before you travel – so you arrive at the port fully prepared rather than scrambling with paperwork at the terminal.

Step 4: Security and Boarding

After check-in, you will pass through a security screening process – similar in format to an airport, but without the time pressure of a departure gate. Once through, you walk the gangway and you are onboard. Your Mediterranean cruise has begun.

Cruise Cards and Cabin Access

What is a Cruise Card and How Does it Work?

Once you are onboard, your cruise card, medallion, or wristband, depending on your cruise line becomes your all access pass for the entire sailing. It opens your cabin door, records any onboard purchases to your account, and serves as your identification when going ashore and returning to the ship at each port of call.

It’s also worth knowing that cruise ships operate on a cashless system, meaning all onboard purchases such as drinks, dining, shopping, or spa treatments are charged directly to your cruise account via your card, medallion or wristband. This makes everything onboard seamless and easy, with no need to carry cash around the ship.

Different cruise lines handle the distribution of cabin cards differently. Some will issue your card at the terminal during check-in, so you have it before you even board. Others place it in a small holder outside your cabin door, ready for when you arrive. Neither approach is better than the other – but knowing this in advance means no confusion on the day.

Your Cabin: When is it Ready?

What to Do Before your Cabin is Available

Staterooms are typically ready for guests from around lunchtime on embarkation day. But here is something that first-time cruisers soon discover, and experienced cruisers already know – is that you do not need to wait before you can start exploring the ship.

From the moment you board, the ship is yours to explore. The restaurants are open, the pools are open, and the entertainment spaces are welcoming guests. Cruise lines invest in making embarkation day feel like the holiday has already started – because it has.

Our advice? Head straight to the buffet, get some food, explore the decks, find your favourite areas on the ship. By the time you circle back to your cabin, it will be ready and waiting for you – and your suitcases will very likely already be there.

Don’t Miss the Sail Away – Your First Cruise Moment

One of the most special moments of your cruise happens shortly after departure – and it is something first time cruisers often don’t realise until they experience it. The Sail Away from Barcelona is a real highlight of your holiday.

We always recommend checking your ship’s departure time in advance and making it plan to be up on deck as the ship leaves port. It is a moment where everyone gathers, drink in hand, music playing and the atmosphere is something truly special. Watching Barcelona fade into the distance as you sail out into the Mediterranean, often with the sun beginning to set, is a memory that stays with you long after your holiday ends.

Team Tip from Mairead – Cruise Product Manager

Our Cruise Product Manager Mairead always shares this tip – if you have dining booked in the main dining room or a speciality restaurant on your first evening, make sure it doesn’t clash with sail away. It is one of the best moments of your cruise and not something you want to miss sitting inside.
