If you’re thinking about booking your first cruise holiday, chances are you have a lot of questions, and that’s completely normal. One of the best parts of a first cruise is waking up in a completely different destination without the hassle of multiple airports or repacking. You simply settle in, relax, and let the ship take you from destination to the next. It is one of the reasons so many first-time cruisers become lifelong cruisers from that moment on.
Cruising is one of the most rewarding ways to travel, but like anything new, it helps to know what to expect before you board. At Click&Go Holidays, our cruise specialists work with Irish holidaymakers every day – from first-timers full of questions to seasoned cruisers planning their next adventure. The questions we hear most often from first timers are always the same, and the answers make a genuine difference to how much you enjoy your holiday.

1. Book Excursions and Dining Early – Before you Board
One of the biggest first-time cruise mistakes is leaving everything until you’re onboard. By then, the most popular shore excursions are fully booked, speciality restaurants are taken, and spa availability is limited. It is a frustrating start to a holiday that should feel completely effortless.
Most cruise lines open their pre-booking portal weeks or months in advance. Once your booking is confirmed, you can secure excursions, dining and experiences early – often at a better price. Popular ports like Rome, Santorini, Dubrovnik and Barcelona sell out quickly, especially in peak season.
When you book your cruise with Click&Go Holidays, our team will tell you exactly when your cruise line opens its pre-booking window and which excursions and experiences are worth securing early for your specific itinerary. It is one of the real advantages of booking with a specialist rather than book directly.

2. Never Miss Your Port Times – The Ship will sail without you
Every experienced cruiser will tell you the same thing: the ship leaves on time. There is no announcement, no extended grace period, if you are not back on board by the “All Aboard” time – which is typically 30-45 minutes before the ship departs, not the departure time itself – you will watch your cruise sail away from the dockside.
It sounds dramatic but each morning, your daily schedule will show all aboard time for that day’s port. Aim to be back on the ship at least an hour before that time, particularly if you are doing an independent tour rather than a cruise line excursion.
The key difference with cruise line excursions is that if the group is delayed – through traffic, a tour over-running or unexpected circumstances – the ship will wait for them. That guarantee does not extend to independent tours. For first-time cruisers in unfamiliar ports, booking through the cruise line is the sensible option, especially in destinations where getting back can be unpredictable.
Before you leave the ship to explore a new destination, it is also worth saving the local port agent’s contact number, so if anything does go wrong, they are your first call.

3. Gratuities Explained – What you’ll pay and why
Gratuities can catch first time cruisers off guard if they are not expected. Unlike a hotel stay where tipping is discretionary, most mainstream cruise lines apply a daily service charge automatically to your onboard account. These tips are distributed among the crew who look after you throughout your cruise – your cabin steward, waiters, and the wider team working behind the scenes.
The good news is when you book with Click&Go Holidays, most of the time the gratuities are included in your booking. It keeps your budget clear and removes any sense of surprise charges from your onboard account at the end of the week.

4. Don’t Let Seasickness Fears put you off going on a cruise holiday
Seasickness is the worry we hear most often from Irish first timers considering a cruise and it is completely understandable. Modern cruise ships are designed to be incredibly stable, fitted with advanced stabilisers fins that extend from the hull to counteract wave movement.
If this is a concern, your itinerary choice matters, and our cruise specialists can steer you towards routes and seasons that typically see calmer conditions. Let us know if seasickness on a cruise is a concern and we will factor cabin position into our recommendation from the start. A midship cabin on a lower deck is a simple choice that makes a real difference, and it is exactly the kind of detail our cruise specialists think about on your behalf.
5. Your Ship can be Bigger than you think
Nothing quite prepares first-time cruisers for the scale of a modern cruise ship. Standing at the dockside looking up at a vessel the size of a small town is genuinely extraordinary. A large ship like Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas carries more than 6,000 passengers across 20 decks, with multiple pools, a variety of restaurants, a theatre, and a waterpark all at sea.
It takes a day or two to find your way around and that is completely normal.
Get familiar with the deck plan – available in your cruise line app and usually posted in the lifts. The central atrium is almost always the easiest landmark to orient yourself from. If you are ever unsure where you are, find the atrium and work outwards from there. By day three, you will be navigating like a regular.

6. What’s Included and What will Cost Extra
One of the biggest sources of first-timer surprise not always pleasant – is discovering what is and is not covered by your cruise fare. Click&Go Holiday Cruises usually include Return Flights from Ireland, 10kg bag, all meals and snacks, Entertainment and Gratuities. For many holidaymakers, that alone represents exceptional value compared to a land-based holiday.
But there are costs that sit outside the fare and knowing them in advance keeps your budget honest. Drinks – including alcoholic drinks, a variety of soft drinks and speciality coffees – are typically charged separately. Speciality restaurants carry a surcharge or a set menu price. Shore excursions, spa treatments, and Wi-Fi packages all add up over the course of a week.
Many cruise lines offer drinks packages that bundle beverages into a flat daily rate, and for some travellers they represent good value. Whether a package works for you depends on how much you typically drink throughout the day. As an approximate guide, if two or more alcoholic drinks per day alongside soft drinks and coffees sounds about right, a package will usually pay for itself. Our cruise specialists can help you work out whether one makes sense for your trip.

7. Download the Cruise Line App Before You Travel
Every major cruise line now has a dedicated app, and for your first time cruise holiday it is genuinely one of the most useful tools available. The key is to download and set it up before you leave home, while you have reliable Wi-Fi. Most cruise line apps allow you to complete online check-in, view your daily itinerary, make dining and entertainment reservations, chat with travel companions on the ship, access your onboard account balance, and navigate the ship using interactive maps.
Completing your online check in through the app before you travel also speeds up the embarkation process significantly. Uploading your passport details, emergency contacts and a check-in photo in advance means your boarding pass is ready to go and you spend far less time in queues on day one.
8. Wi-Fi and Staying Connected at Sea
Staying connected while cruising is straightforward once you understand how it works – but it is different to what you are used to on a land holiday and not knowing that in advance can lead to a very unpleasant mobile bill when you get home.
Turn on Airplane Mode the moment you board
This is the single most important thing to do before anything else. Irish mobile roaming charges at sea can be extremely high because the ship’s satellite network operates as a separate time zone, outside standard EU roaming protections. Switch to airplane mode as soon as you step onboard and reconnect only through the ship’s Wi-Fi or in port on local networks.
Wi-Fi Packages
All major cruise lines offer Wi-Fi packages and purchasing one before you sail I almost always cheaper than buying it onboard. Speeds have improved significantly in recent years, though they remain slower than home broadband. Most cruise lines offer tiered options – a browse package for access to internet access, social media and email access, and a premium streaming tier for those who need faster speeds or want to video call family at home.
For most travellers, a standard package is more than adequate. If you are travelling as a couple or family and only need occasional connectivity, one package shared between you is often sufficient for basic tasks. Check your cruise line’s specific terms before purchasing.
Making the most of Port Days
Most ports of calls have free Wi-Fi readily available in cafés, restaurants, and tourist areas. Experienced cruisers save their data-heavy tasks – uploading photos, making video calls, downloading content – for their time ashore, and use the ship’s free messaging app to stay in touch with loved ones on the ship.
9. The Muster Drill – What to expect on day one during the Mandatory Safety Drill
Before any cruise ship leaves the port, a mandatory safety briefing, known as the muster drill, must be completed by everyone. This is a legal requirement under international maritime law, and there are no expectations. It covers what to do in an emergency, how to correctly fit your life jacket, and the location of your designated muster station.
Think of it as the safety announcement on a flight, but slightly more hands-on. The good news is that for most modern cruise ships, the process has become considerably more convenient in recent years.

10. Your Key Card is you Room Key, ID and Wallet all in one
Your cruise card – whether it is called a Sea Pass, medallion, or Key Card, depending on your cruise line, is the most important item you will carry for the entire cruise holiday, and it does a lot more than simply open your cabin door.
Every time you leave and return to the ship at a port, your cruise card gets scanned. It is, in effect your identity document for the duration of the cruise. All onboard purchases – drinks, spa treatments, excursions booked on the ship, speciality dining, gifts from the shop, are charged to your cruise card rather than paid by cash or a separate card. At the end of your cruise, your linked credit or debit card is charged for the full balance.
One thing to note, is the older magnetic stripe cruise cards can be demagnetised due to proximity to mobile phone or another card with a magnetic strip. Keep your cruise card in a separate pocket or pouch to avoid this. Most newer ships have moved to chip-based or digital cards, but it is a good habit regardless.
If you are travelling with children their cards can usually be configured at guest services to restrict onboard purchases, giving you full control over what they can and cannot charge independently. It is a small but genuinely useful feature for family cruisers.
