Many superlatives describe Dubrovnik and it is, of course, "The Pearl of the Adriatic" and even George Bernard Shaw proclaimed:"If you want to see paradise on earth, come to Dubrovnik". The city is stunningly dramatic and picturesque and holidays to Croatia should always include at least a cursory visit. The entire Dalmatian Coast is really physically beautiful and worth exploring at leisure.
Jutting as a picturesque promontory dipping its toes in the Adriatic, Dubrovnik is protected by massively thick walls built between the 13th and 17th centuries and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Medieval style cobblestoned streets, meandering alleys, baroque buildings and marble squares all huddle within the walls and provide the most atmospheric location for strolling and enjoying pavement cafe culture. Outside Dubrovnik's walls, the landscape is quite hilly and covered in lovely pine forests and the coastline is indented with secluded coves and beaches.
