Resorts in Cascais - Full of character and atmosphere, Cascais is the summer retreat of the city dwellers of Lisbon and is also now an elegant Lisbon Coast resort for international visitors. Located about 30 km west of the capital, for centuries Cascais has been a refuge for monarchs and aristocrats and latterly, artists, politicians, writers and actors.
Fashionable and stylish now, Cascais has not forgotten its fishing heritage and its origins as a tiny fishing hamlet are recalled in the old harbour area where locals still mend their nets, colourful boats jostle for space and a lively fish auction ensues every day. Retaining cobbled streets and narrow meandering alleyways, the charm of the town is its local "feel", and, albeit for the fact that it has swelled in size to become a substantial resort with many amenities, it is yet traditional and typical in so many ways.
A very smart marina, three lovely sandy beaches, vibrant nightlife and great shopping are factors which make Cascais popular with a trendy young set and a more settled bohemian clientele. Close to the resort, the famous beach at Guincho attracts windsurfers with its breakers and rollers and here, some of the most delicious seafood restaurants are located.
"Boca de infierno" - Mouth of Hell! - where waves crash through a rock, create spray and a natural blowhole echoes a boom is only 3 km from the edge of the resort, and, just outside town, a challenging 18 hole links course awaits the golfing aficionado. As Lisbon coast resorts go, Cascais is hard to top for the sheer picturesque value and local feel of the town.
