Holidays to Istanbul promise to infuse excitement with truly awesome sights. Turkey's capital city, Istanbul is host to almost 14 million people and is a melting pot of vibrant culture, fabulous buildings and friendly locals.
Straddling the Bosphorous, Istanbul is traditionally described as having one foot in Europe and one foot in Asia. This busy waterway and natural harbour, Golden Horn, plies between two continents and the commercial and historical side of the city lies in Europe whilst virtually a third of the population lives in Asia. Being the cradle of one of the world's oldest and richest civilisations, Istanbul (old Constantinople) was also capital of the Ottoman and Byzantine Empires, so holidays in Istanbul are rich in history and amazing archaelogical artifacts.
Istanbul holidays throb with the heartbeat of the Orient and the Grand Bazaar, one of the world's largest covered markets, is case in point where you could wander all day amongst the wonderfully diverse and colourful stalls. Bargain for glittering gold and silver jewellery, sift through veritable mountains of aromatic spices, try on embroidered Aladdin style slippers, buy copper utensils, marvel at stained glass lanterns, admire stunning Turkish carpets or take home a fez!
Holidays in Istanbul absolutely must include a trip to the amazing mosques dotted throughout the city where the skyline is dappled with minarets and turrets, domes and cupolas. Hagia Sophia, the world's largest Cathedral for 1,000 years, then a mosque and now a museum is simply breathaking. the wonderful Topkapi Palace, the original residence of the Sultan and his Harem ( the old concubine quarter), is an eye opener!
These days, Galata forms part of the Beyoglu district including Taksim Square which is the entertainment area of the city with great restaurants, local cafes and clubs and where the lively ambience of the city springs to life with legendary nightlife options. This vast city will never disappoint as it's cosmopolitan heart beats 24 hours a day.
The essence of holidays in Istanbul is truly a combination of fascinating sightseeing, the pleasure of a mild Mediterranean climate, delicious cuisine, historical and cultural marvels and delightful people. Istanbul holidays are the jewel in the shining crown of a land where east meets west in ultimate harmony.
